It was Saturday, August 20, 2011. I woke up much earlier than usual to find the TV on and tuned to CNN where Dr. Sanjay Gupta was previewing a program called “The Last Heart Attack.” Dr. Gupta’s investigation of a “heart-attack proof” diet initially sounded very strange. This was interesting to me, not because I had any risk factors for heart disease, but because I knew it is the #1 killer in America.
That very morning I started researching the diet on the Internet. I quickly learned what a whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet means. “Whole food” means very limited or no processed foods (including refined oils) and “plant-based” means meals based on plant rather than animal foods (meat, dairy, and eggs). It includes four food groups: vegetables, fruits, legumes (beans and lentils), and whole grains. In other words,whole plants, packaged as God (or nature) designed them.
I found plenty of solid evidence in favor of the diet and was surprised that it looked much more compelling than I had expected. I learned that the evidence demonstrates that a WFPB diet doesn’t justreduceour chance of getting heart disease, but actuallyeliminatesit. This impressed me. It isn’t easy to make big lifestyle changes, and I don’t feel motivated when it onlyreducesmy chances of having problems; it feels like a gamble.Eliminatingmy chances of getting a disease, especially the #1 killer, felt very motivating to me.

Up to this point in my life, I just assumed we’d all end up with chronic disease at some point. Eventual poor health seemed inevitable. I figured I’d “cross that bridge” when I got there. But now the thought of living life with a dramatically reduced chance of ever getting any of these diseases sounded pretty good. I started to consider what type of lifestyle change would NOT be worth these results. I started to think about what good health is worth to me.
Like most Latter-day Saints, I grew up thinking I knew exactly what the Word of Wisdom said. My life was half over before I realized there is SO MUCH MORE to this precious revelation than I ever imagined!
My passion for the Word of Wisdom was sparked by discovering a “heart-attack proof” diet, otherwise known as a whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet. Careful study of the scientific literature convinced me that this diet not only prevents heart disease but also most of the other common chronic diseases rampant in our society (like diabetes, strokes, obesity, kidney disease, arthritis, and many types of cancer). I became so convinced that this is that way humans should be eating that I decided I better start eating this way myself.
As my diet changed, I quickly lost weight. Within seven months, I lost 25 pounds, which was ALL of the remaining weight I had gained since graduating from high school over 30 years earlier. I discovered that not only was I losing weight but literallyeveryhealth issue I had disappeared. And I was feeling great—full of energy and vitality. As I read about the experience of others on this diet, I learned that they all had the same experience: they eliminated disease, reached their ideal weight, gained energy, and felt fantastic!
It was only after I discovered this magnificent diet that I realized EVERYTHING I was now learning was already contained in D&C 89, the revelation known as the Word of Wisdom. It was then that I realized that this diet is not only key to helping us reach our highestphysicalpotential, but it is also key to helping us achieve our highestspiritualpotential.
